Why do we roleplay?
Over the past decades the usefulness of role-play in education and therapeutic settings has been shown. In this research we show that even role-playing games that were not meant to be educational or therapeutic can have positive side effects on the players. Through a case-study of a body of Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) players (n=930) on Reddit we found that only a minority seems to gain nothing but friends and some fun from the activity, while most describe gaining useful skills for their real life and some even mention the therapeutic effects the game has had on their personal life. These results support the use of D&D as a so called social technology, meant to help us in our complex modern society. Full paper can be found below.
