Cooperative Serendipitous Discoveries with Interactive Evolutionary Computation: a case study with 3D models
Abstract: Finding inspiration during the creation of a 3D model can be a difficult task. The designer can get stuck in the process. This study aims to find a way to stimulate serendipitous discovery in the process of creating a 3D model with the use of an interactive evolutionary algorithm. In this context, serendipitous discovery is the moment you find new inspiration from something you are not looking for. An interactive evolutionary algorithm is used to generate new 3D models based on the initial model created by the designer. To test if this is possible, an experimental tool is built. Reflected upon by the builders and four external evaluators from within the field. The reflection shows a mixed result from the builder and external evaluators. Concluding that serendipitous discovery can be stimulated depending on the state of the design process.
